  37.                     I. WHAT IS MEGA EDIT (TM)?  
  38.  
  39.   Mega Edit (TM) is a Windows 3.0/3.1 application.  Mega Edit (TM)is a 
  40.   powerful ASCII text editor.  It is designed specifically to facilitate 
  41.   complex editing tasks involving multiple and/or large files, where such 
  42.   tasks would be difficult or impossible with other editors currently 
  43.   available for MS Windows 3.0/3.1.

  45.   SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
  46.   Mega Edit (TM) requires Microsoft Windows 3.0 or 3.1 running in STANDARD 
  47.   MODE OR HIGHER.  Also, a VGA, SVGA, or XVGA or other high resolution 
  48.   monitor is recommended, as is a mouse.

  50.   FILES INCLUDED WITH MEGA EDIT (TM):

  52.   MEGAEDIT.EXE -- application executable file.  
  53.   MEGAEDIT.HLP -- application on-line help.
  54.   MEGAED.DLL   -- Mega Edit (TM) dynamic link library.
  55.   COMMDLG.DLL  -- Windows 3.1 Common Dialog library.  This file also
  56.                   comes with Windows 3.1.  You can delete the Mega 
  57.                   Edit (TM) copy if you are using Windows 3.1.
  58.   READ1ST.TXT  -- product documentation.
  59.   README.TXT   -- copyright and distribution guidelines.
  60.   REGISTER.TXT -- registration information.
  61.   REG_FORM.TXT -- registration form.

  65.   NOTE: AFTER YOU USE MEGA EDIT (TM), AND MODIFY SOME OF THE DEFAULTS ON
  66.   THE OPTIONS MENU, MEGA EDIT (TM) WILL CREATE TWO FILES IN YOUR WINDOWS
  67.   SYSTEM DIRECTORY CALLED 'MEGAEDIT.BIN' AND 'MEGAINFO.BIN'.  THESE
  68.   FILES ARE USED TO RETAIN DATA RELATED TO SESSION PREFERENCES THAT
  69.   YOU REQUEST.  YOU MAY DELETE THESE FILES AT ANY TIME, BUT DOING SO
  70.   WILL RESULT IN MEGA EDIT (TM) REVERTING TO THE 'FACTORY SETTINGS'.

  73.               II. SETTING UP MEGA EDIT (TM) ON YOUR SYSTEM
  74.  
  75.   STEP 1. Make a separate directory anywhere on your system and store ALL
  76.   of the distribution files that are part of Mega Edit (TM) in that 
  77.   directory.  If you are using Windows 3.1, you may want to delete the copy 
  78.   of COMMDLG.DLL that is supplied with Mega Edit (TM) - it is already 
  79.   supplied with Windows 3.1.  GENERALLY SPEAKING, ALL MEGA EDIT (TM) 
  80.   DISTRIBUTION FILES SHOULD REMAIN TOGETHER IN THE SAME DIRECTORY.  
  81.   (However, you may copy the MEGAEDIT.HLP and MEGAED.DLL files to your 
  82.   Window's directory if Mega Edit (TM) generates errors concerning not 
  83.   finding these files -- see "TROUBLE SHOOTING", below...).

  85.   STEP 2. Install the Mega Edit (TM) executable file 'MEGAEDIT.EXE' in a 
  86.   Program Manager application folder. If you do not know how to do this, 
  87.   please see your Microsoft Windows 3.x documentation.

  89.   STEP 3. To RUN Mega Edit (TM), select the Mega Edit (TM) icon by either
  90.   double-clicking on it with your mouse, or cursor to the icon and hit the
  91.   ENTER key.

  94.   TROUBLE SHOOTING:
  95.  
  96.   1. YOU DON'T LIKE THE DEFAULT OPENING SIZE OF THE MEGA EDIT SCREEN.
  97.  
  98.   Mega Edit decides on its opening screen size by checking the
  99.   value set in the Options/Preferences dialog box for word-wrap/
  100.   'right margin at:'.  The size selected will be just large enough
  101.   to accommodate the margin.  If you increase or decrease this value,
  102.   Mega Edit will change its opening size accordingly.  To modify this
  103.   setting, select 'Preferences' from the 'Options' menu.

  105.   2. PROBLEMS WITH GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT WHEN MEGA EDIT STARTS.
  106.  
  107.   We have had several reports of this, and all have been traced
  108.   to the user's launching Mega Edit from versions of the "Norton
  109.   Desktop for Windows" (TM) prior to version 2.0.  Versions of "Norton 
  110.   Desktop for Windows" (TM) prior to 2.0 are incompatible with Mega Edit.  
  111.   If you have this problem, try running Mega Edit directly from the 
  112.   Program Manager, or using the File Manager.  In most cases, this will 
  113.   eliminate the problem.

  115.   3. PROBLEMS WITH APPLICATION NOT FINDING HELP FILE, OR NOT ABLE
  116.      TO LOAD MEGAED.DLL:
  117.  
  118.   If you DO NOT use the Window's Program Manager as your main Window's
  119.   manager program, make sure to set up whatever manager you are using
  120.   so that the "initialization" or "working" directory for starting up 
  121.   Mega Edit (TM) is the same as the directory which holds the Mega Edit (TM) 
  122.   program files.  One of Program Manager's virtues is that it automatically 
  123.   handles this, while some alternative Window's managers do not, and have 
  124.   to be configured to start an application in its source directory. 
  125.   Alternatively, you can simply copy the two files (MEGAED.DLL and
  126.   MEGAEDIT.HLP) to your "WINDOWS" sub-directory, normally C:\WINDOWS.

  128.   Symptoms of a problem in this area might be error messages such as
  129.   'Can't find MEGAED.DLL, please insert in drive A:' or problems
  130.   finding the MEGAEDIT.HLP (HELP) file.

  132.   4. PROBLEMS RETAINING PREFERENCE SETTINGS FROM SESSION TO SESSION
  133.  
  134.   If for some reason you do not have a standard windows directory
  135.   structure, with a directory called /windows/system, you may have some
  136.   problems operating Mega Edit (TM).  It would be recommended that you create
  137.   a sub-directory of whatever directory it is that holds your main windows
  138.   executable files called 'system'.  This should resolve any problems.

  142.                    III. TIPS ON USING MEGA EDIT (TM)
  143.  
  144.   Mega Edit (TM) includes an extensive on-line help system.  Documentation
  145.   contained in the on-line system explains every feature of the product.
  146.   You can invoke on-line help by pressing the F1 function key any time
  147.   after you have started the editor.  
  148.  
  149.   The on-line Help system is organized to be practical and concise.  Using
  150.   the browse feature, it is possible to read every topic that it contains
  151.   in 30 minutes or less.  It is recommended strongly that you read through
  152.   the topics in the main index entitled "Up and Running".  These provide a
  153.   good overview of Mega Edit (TM) features.  Although "reading the manual" 
  154.   has become a lost art these days, (generally with good reason!), you are
  155.   encouraged to spend 30 minutes reading the on-line reference to the
  156.   product.  You shouldn't have any problem understanding the product or its
  157.   features anytime thereafter.

  159.   New user's should note that Mega Edit (TM) has some special, extended
  160.   features to support complex editing tasks that involve many and/or large
  161.   files.  Again, please have a good look at 'Up and Running Topics' in
  162.   the on-line help system.
